Stephanie Proffitt is Board Certified in Child Welfare Law and Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Board certification means an attorney has been subjected to extensive experience, testing and peer review, and it is considered a symbol of skill and credibility. Less than 1% of attorneys in Texas are board certified in family. Only .03% hold dual certification in both Family Law and Child Welfare Law (and more than a third of them are sitting judges). Stephanie received her second certification in Child Welfare Law in 2019, making her among the very few who have gone the distance to prove their abilities, their experience and their prowess in these fields.

That experience goes back more than three decades, beginning as a family law paralegal in California. In that role, Stephanie taught herself the ins and outs of filing for divorce and started a business helping people with all the necessary paperwork. In the process, she identified a disconnect: She would send her clients off with flawlessly prepared documents, and yet that often wasn’t enough for them to win in court.

What was missing was quality representation.

Stephanie ultimately got her law degree, with two small children at home. She moved to Texas, and in 1998, she started her own family law practice, which is now home to several attorneys and paralegals ready to fight for their clients, no matter what.

Stephanie has built a reputation as one of Houston’s fiercest advocates, providing her clients with the quality legal representation they need to come out on top in matters of divorce, child custody, spousal support, child welfare and general family law. She was part of the legal team that took on Child Protective Services and its handling of child abuse cases — work that resulted in the largest sanction ever levied against the agency. CPS was also ordered to retrain its investigators as part of the case.

Whether she’s combatting negligence in government institutions or navigating the intricacies of a complex divorce, Stephanie maintains a powerful commitment to doing what’s right for her clients, every step of the way.

“We’ve got your back. We’re going to stand beside you. We’re going to fight to the end, while all along hoping we can work out something without the necessity of going to court.”
