3 tips for preparing for your initial consultation with a lawyer

Write down

All lawyers meet with their prospective clients in what is known as an initial consultation. This is the in-depth interaction you will have together, and this meeting will allow both parties to decide if you all should work together. Essentially you are both interviewing each other, gaining information and potentially advice even if you choose to not work together. While this is just an initial consultation it is very important to show up prepared to make the best use of everyone’s time and your money. Here are 3 tips to consider before your initial consultation with a lawyer.

1. Have everything written down.

Let’s face it, seeking an attorney can be unnerving. Your initial consultation could potentially lead to nervousness and anxiety leading to a scattered mind. Write everything down ahead of time. If you have questions, important details, dates, or names, write them all down.

2. Gather all documents and make copies of them.

You should arrive at your consultation with all the documentation that you know of that might be relevant to your case. Some attorneys may give you a checklist in advance, but if not, ensure that you go through all your documentation and make copies of what you think could be applicable to your case.

3. Be careful who you bring with you.

While you can bring someone with you to your consultation, but remember, all attorney-client confidentiality is lost with a third-party in the room. It’s important to remember that depending on what time of case you have, someone who was present at your consultation could be called to testify against you based on anything they heard said in your initial meeting.

Your attorney is committed to fully participating in your consultation and ensuring they are the right fit for you and your case. Be sure you give them your best and make sure you receive the same in return.
